Membership committee member Amber Mundinger brought together a fantastic panel and planned the event sponsored by Karl’s Event Services. Christina Neault, Executive Producer of IMG Fashion, and George Strickland of Karl’s Event Services revealed the secrets to running New York Fashion Week – plan, plan, and then plan some more!

The panel discussion, which was moderated by Amber, was eye-opening even for the most experienced event professionals.   With so many moving parts in Fashion Week planning – tents, décor, NYC regulations and permits, union labor and unpredictable weather, to name a few – everyone in attendance received some valuable take-away from the session.

As always happens at ISES gatherings, advice and ideas were shared by all. George described how designing, building, and constructing the huge tents used for Fashion Week in both Bryant Park and Lincoln Center is a process involving dozens of people from IMG, NYC, Karl’s and more!  The tents constructed by Karl’s Event Services range from small pop-up event rooms to multi-leveled semi-permanent buildings, and the team uses many of these styles to create the different settings and venues required for Fashion Week. During an energetic Q&A session, George advised an ISES member on the best procedure for building tents in high-wind areas and suggested creative new event locations in the city, while Christina recommended that clients share resources when planning their runway shows.

The Pink  Powered by Moss team views TSE as the beginning of the new season, the new year with new product offerings and a large outpouring of our energy.  It sets the tone for our direction of our marketing and production into the year ahead.

Event professionals gather from around the world, and this year we are in Tampa.  The Education Program – with over 10 tracks to choose from – and Showcasing Events kick off on January 24th.  The Exhibit Hall with over 200 vendors opens on the 25th and the entire conference runs through the 27th.

While at TSE, we will meet new people and cavort with old friends.  We will take in new information from formal education sessions and conversations with colleagues. In addition to the elaborate events and parties produced in association with TSE, we will view new ideas and trends via the trade show floor.

On January 23rd, ISES officers meet for Leadership Training.  Both the training and meeting with fellow ISES leaders from all over the world are invaluable and inform my work throughout the year.

My role as Chapter President of ISES New York Metro has renewed my excitement for TSE.  From the ISES Education Track to the powerful and lasting connections we make with one another, I am proud to say that ISES adds value to TSE.

SO FAR, SO GOOD:

This fall saw some great programming starting with our successful opening event “An Evening of Innovation.” In October, David Beahm inspired us with “Making a Living and Retaining Your Sanity in Special Events.” And, at Bizbash 2011 our members were treated to professional head shots and our fall membership drive saw a record number of new ISES members join right at the our BizBash booth.  November’s program, “PR Tips from the Pros” brought together three top-notch professionals who shared their insights with an eager crowd.

From the beginning our Leadership has striven to bring added value to our members.  From top notch speakers, free headshots, members-only meet and greets and free dedicated events to spotlights in our BizBash Industry Corner page and scholarship opportunities. 

We are pleased to announce that The SEARCH Foundation has awarded not one but TWO Chapter members with their Education Scholarship to The Special Event. Congratulations to Vanessa Wells of Neuman’s Catering and Karla Schmidt of Barkley Kalpak Associates!  This year’s Expo takes place in Tampa, FL on January 24^th – 27^th.

MEMBERSHIP:

In 2012, ISES International turns 25 years old! To celebrate there is a special promotion, 50 for 25. For each member that joins and lists you as a referral, you will receive $25.00 toward your next year’s dues.  The more people you refer, the more you earn – up to a FREE membership!

And, if you haven’t joined yet then now is the time to jump on board.  A six month membership is only $199.  It is such a good deal that I am going to repeat it – if you have been curious about ISES or have not renewed this year, this is the time to JOIN NOW!

LOOKING FORWARD:

We have some exciting programming and networking coming up in 2012. On January 10^th Karl’s Event Services and IMG Fashion are hosting the members-only, “Tent & Rental Innovations for 2012” at Celsius at Citi Pond. Celsius is a temporary two-story glass enclosed restaurant, bar and event space built by Karl’s each year.  It features indoor and outdoor heated seating and spectacular views of Bryant Park.

Then on January 31^st the Andaz at Fifth Avenue plays host to “Client Loyalty: The New Currency” presented by Jennifer Trethewey, Managing Director the jt Group and Chair ISES Australasia with remarks by David Adler, CEO & Founder of BizBash Media.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Our two signature events, The Sustainability Summit and The Big Apple Awards, are being planned right now. The Sustainability Summit has already placed a Call for Committee Members and the Big Apple Awards wants your nominations for Honorees and will also be building it’s Planning Committee as well.

So, if you ever said “It would be better if….” then it’s time for you to put your money where your mouth is, cast your vote and volunteer on a committee. As part of the Chapter’s ongoing, collaborative effort to bring sustainable event production into the industry mainstream, ISES NY Metro will be holding its second annual Sustainability Summit on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at the Rubin Museum of Art. We are thrilled to invite you to be a part it!

CHANGING THE INDUSTRY:

Building upon the success of last year’s inaugural program, our team will again solicit the participation of a broad variety of constituencies to learn about, listen to, and engage with the latest sustainability standards and practices through a comprehensive evening of workshops, panel discussions, interactive social media and networking. The event will focus on providing participants with a range of useful tips, trends, and resources in sustainable event planning, as well as showcasing sponsors and our host venue via the broadest possible outreach. 

TAKE PART:

If last year is any indication, the 2012 Sustainability Summit will only be as strong as our team. Who better than our members to help us prepare for this crucial annual event? We’re currently building a steering committee and are seeking assistance in the following areas:

MEETING SCHEDULE – JANUARY through MARCH, 2012:

In addition to smaller, TBD meetings to accommodate communication between individuals, we’ve created a schedule for full meetings, beginning in January, 2012:

• 1/10/12 – 2/21/12: The Steering Committee is scheduled to meet bi–weekly every Tuesday, beginning January 10, 2012 through February 21, 2012
• 3/6/12 – 4/3/12: The Steering Committee is schedule to meet every Tuesday, beginning March 6, 2012 through March, 27 2012, with the event itself scheduled for the following Tuesday, April 3, 2012.
